About the Metro New York BBB Charity Seal Program
The Education and Research Foundation of the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York (BBB Foundation) offers Metro New York area charities that meet all 20 of the BBB Standards for Charity Accountability
the option of applying for a BBB Charity Seal. The BBB Charity Seal is a widely-recognized and trusted symbol, demonstrating that the charity meets the BBB's 20 Standards, which cover a range of important charity best practice issues such as governance, effectiveness self-assessment, how donor dollars are used, financial management, privacy issues, fundraising, and more. The BBB Charity Seal can be displayed online and in solicitation materials by charities that have earned it. Participation in the Seal program requires a license agreement and a modest recurring fee, which is based on a sliding scale pegged to charity size.
There is no fee for basic BBB charity review. Only charities that voluntarily choose to participate in the BBB Charity Seal recognition program are charged a fee. Metro New York's BBB Foundation reports on over 850 charities that do and do not meet its standards. All the Metro New York BBB Foundation's charity reports are accessible to the public at no charge on the www.newyork.bbb.org
website, including many reports on charities that meet all 20 BBB Standards but that have not chosen to be BBB Charity Seal Holders.
The national BBB Standards for Charity Accountability
were established by the BBB's Wise Giving Alliance, based upon research, conversations and meetings with leading nonprofit and philanthropic executives, and recommendations made by a blue-ribbon panel of experts. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability
have been adopted by the Metro New York BBB Foundation for use by its New York Philanthropic Advisory Service (NYPAS) charity review program. We welcome your input and questions about the BBB Standards.
