Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty
MISSION:
"Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty serves clients through social services, Jewish Community Council networks and advocacy. Programs include Crisis Intervention where individuals facing situations of eviction, loss of income, health emergencies, immigration related problems and domestic violence, are provided with services such as emergency financial assistance, entitlement assistance, advocacy, counseling and referrals for legal and career services. The Kosher Food Pantry delivers kosher food to households year round. The Housing Program operates supportive housing throughout the city for low income elderly, formerly homeless and mentally ill individuals. Home Services provide families with clothing and furniture donations. Home Care assists elderly clients with bathing, dressing, shopping, cooking and other essential daily living tasks, enabling them to live in their own homes with dignity. Access to Low-Cost Health Insurance helps individuals apply for free or low cost health insurance through Medicaid, Child and Family Health Plus and Medicare. Met Council serves as the umbrella organization for a network of 25 grassroots Jewish Community Councils located throughout the five boroughs of New York. The collaborative relationship enables clients to reach the organization efficiently and use services effectively. Local JCC’s are based on geographic location to assist clients’ specific needs. Council caseworkers work closely with Met Council for specialized services and support. Met Council assesses and addresses new areas of need by publishing studies such as the Report on Jewish Poverty. Through these and other studies, the organization is able to bring resources to serve those in need and advocate for their clients. "
